about
This song is a deathbed testimony and confession written from both a patient and caregiver experience in a flowing, hypnotic verse-chorus song form. The story moves from struggle, grief, denial, bargaining, and then subtly shifts to wonderful words of love, acknowledgement and beautiful memories all while being driven by a subtly rising chorus of pleading and longing. The song ends with both patient and caretaker becoming deeply immersed in a beautiful outdoor nature experience as the world becomes incredibly alive and present for them both. They hold on to each other and decide not to go…. at least Not Today.
lyrics
Verse 1:
My body wants to leave here, but my soul says no
And I don’t know which way it’ll go
My joints are aching and my heart beats slow,
Oh, I hate feeling so down low
Wish I could walk, wish I could stand,
But here you are holding my
hand
You hide your tears but I feel you weep
I hear you whisper when I sleep (You say)
Chorus:
Not Today
Stay Today
Don’t go away
Not Today
Oh, please don’t tell me it’s true
In this life we are through
Cause I can’t be without you
Verse 2:
You say, “Baby I love ya with all my heart
Losing you tears me apart
My soul wants you but your body might go
A life without you, I don’t want to know
Not much to do, so much to say
Oh I wish you didn’t feel this way
I wish we could laugh, I wish we could dance
Wish we had a forever romance
Chorus:
But Not Today
Stay Today
Don’t go away
Not Today
Oh, please don’t tell me it’s true
In this life we are through
Cause I can’t be without you
Verse 3:
So you picked me up and carried me outside
And what we saw blew our minds
The sky was blue and the bees buzzed by
The birds sang and the clouds puffed,
“Why? Why? Why?”
Well, I don’t know why, where or when
But it sure is nice you holding me again.
So for now let’s cast those fears aside,
Hold on tight and take heavy sign
Chorus:
Not Today
Stay Today
Don’t go away
Not Today
And who knows what's in store?
Maybe a billion days more
But one thing's for sure
Not Today
